South Boston Speedway always puts on a good show. It’s a small track with views all around and they draw fans of all kinds for all sorts of NASCAR-linked racing. It’s a small place with a big history of even bigger racing launching many into bigger seats and the national spotlight.
One such is Denny Hamlin who had raced here many times before he was the driver of the #11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. At South Boston, he brought the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown to bring awareness and raise funds for the fight against cystic fibrosis with his Denny Hamlin Foundation.
The race had a few other nationals competing with the local guys. David Ragan, Chase Elliott, Jeb Burton and another local who has stepped up, Timothy Peters, were also on hand to turn laps.
Timothy Peters actually captured the pole and went on to win it in a hard fought battle that left many hanging in sheet metal on the last turn of the last lap.
Another track favorite and former track champion, Peyton Sellers, had a good run but other drivers’ contact and a late crash put him in the pits with just laps to go. Unfortunate luck for Sellers as he is sponsored by one of the major contributors for South Boston Speedway and their racing connection. Danville Toyota Scion supplies the pace car and was heavily involved in Toyota’s presence with Denny Hamlin at South Boston Speedway.
