NASCAR is off. Grand-Am, American Le Mans… Both are off. IndyCar and F1 are off. Even NHRA is off.

Racing just got started and here comes Peter Cottontail to shut it all down. Easter weekend is fine for chocolate bunnies and colored eggs and peeps.

Peeps, by the way, used to be yellow. They still have the yellow ones but now they come out in all sorts of colors not seen in nature. Not seen anywhere, for that matter, until you find them poking out of fluorescent green, fake grass in a machine woven basket on Easter morning.

Easter celebrates the Christian holiday of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the coming of Spring and the scientific creation of unnatural colors. It also puts auto racing off the track.

We think drivers’ families hide their keys in colored eggs so they can’t leave.

So what do you do if you are a racing fan and just want to see some fender chasin’ over your holiday? You could go to WalMart and watch husbands race in and out trying to get another pack of peeps for the kids because they’ve eaten them already…

Or… You could go to Virginia International Raceway. Saturday, March 30th, the ChumpCar series is on… All day! Ten hours of racing on the cheap. Chump Cars are low budget and allow practically anyone to get in on racing. Start with a low budget car, toss a roll cage in it, con some buddies into being a “crew” and go race the thing.

At VIR, they run on Saturday. The ChumpCar drivers take any opportunity to get on a track and Easter weekend offers an opportunity so they are out to race the rust off.

These drivers are proud of their cars and truly love to race them. They have built these cars from the practical toss-aways of the average motoring community. These cars were on the way to the junk yard and these drivers pulled them from the grave and put new life into them as race cars.

It is a racing celebration of Easter and the new life of Spring! The cars are all kinds of colors and the hunt is on for who can last the ten hours and take a win. Easter eggs on wheels!

At Virginia International Raceway, this Saturday, March 30th, the Optima Batteries ChumpCar Chump-Draft’n is on. The grid sets off at 8:00AM to race through 6:00PM in the evening. Check the VIR website and/or the ChumpCar site for further information.

Easter Sunday, colored eggs, chocolate bunnies and fluorescent peeps. You can go racing Saturday and still make your annual Church service on Sunday.

All the other racing is off for the holiday so your “speed fix” is on at VIR! Bring your “peeps” and make a day of it!
